GISC Recognized as Official German School Abroad (Deutsche Auslandsschule – DAS) by the Federal Republic of Germany
In a major development, the German International School Chicago (GISC) has joined the select list of educational institutions in key cities across the globe recognized by the Federal Republic of Germany as official German Schools Abroad (Deutsche Auslandsschulen – DAS).
On October 1, GISC celebrated its new DAS status with a festive signing ceremony in front of 100 invited guests at the GISC campus in Chicago’s Ravenswood neighborhood. Representing the German Foreign Office, Ralf Beste, Director-General for Culture and Society, signed the contract with Julie Steffen, Vice Chair, Board of Trustees, GISC.
The festive ceremony featured representatives of the German Consulate General in Chicago as well as the City of Chicago, the German American Chamber of Commerce (GACC), and other representatives of the German-American community in Chicago and the Midwest. Guests also included local business chambers, school faculty and parents, and the media. The ceremony featured a musical performance by GISC students to celebrate this step forward for the school.
With the contract signing, GISC becomes one of almost 140 official DAS schools across the globe. GISC is now one of only seven such schools in the United States, alongside German schools located in Boston, New York (2), Washington, D.C., Portland, and Silicon Valley. What’s more, GISC will bridge the gap as the only official DAS school in the entire Midwestern United States.
“We are honored to become a contributing member school within the German Schools Abroad network,” said Ben Hebebrand, Director of GISC. “This membership is an indicator of our school's collective efforts to offer our students a quality program.

RacletteCorner: The Ultimate Online Destination for Raclette Lovers in the US
RacletteCorner is an online store that caters to Raclette lovers in the US. It was founded by Sonja Hoffmann, a Swiss-German who moved to the US over 20 years ago and wanted to share the taste and warmth of Raclette with others.
Her online store, RacletteCorner, is still the only website in the US dedicated to everything Raclette. Besides a huge selection of raclette cheeses, household raclette grills and accessories like “Gschwellti” bags are part of the product line as well as Swiss inspired meats like Buendnerfleisch and Landjaeger.
Swiss mountains, cows and green meadows are essential elements of great raclette cheeses. In addition to the well known brand of Emmi and Mifroma, RacletteCorner offers raclette cheese directly from Arosa, canton Graubuenden (Alp Maran) and Emmenthal, canton Bern (Raclette from JUMI).
RacletteCorner is the US distributor for TTM, the Swiss manufacturer of high-quality traditional raclette machines that can hold a half wheel of cheese. They can be used at home and are also ideal for restaurant owners and food truck operators who want to bring a little piece of Switzerland to America. They are authentic, durable, and easy to use.
Whether you are new to Raclette or a seasoned fan, you will find everything you need at RacletteCorner.
