SABC is looking for a motivated intern

Dear SABC Members,

We are looking for a motivated intern to help us to prepare the new edition of the SABC Business Directory of the US Midwest. The main task of the intern will be to update contact information of the listed companies mainly through internet research. We estimate that this will take a maximum of 160 hours in the Fall/Winter 2015.

I am reaching out to you if you be able to support us with this and have a few questions for you:
- Do you have an intern whom you would like to assign to this project?
- Can you recommend an intern to us?
- Would you be able to offer a space and the use of a computer with internet connection to an intern for the duration of the project?

We have a limited budget available for this.

I think this could be an interesting experience for a motivated intern and would be a major contribution in the preparation of a wonderful resource. Thank you for getting back to us on this by September 30. 2015 by e-mail to sutha.heck@sabcnow.com.

SABC Corporate Member and Jazz artist SAM BURCKHARDT celebrated his new album release Fly Over (2015) at the legendary Green Mill in Chicago.

One of the privileges of being a musician is that you get to play, work, and record with your friends. For this latest CD, I collaborated with Chicago jazz and blues guitarist Joel Paterson. We started working together a few years back and we share a love for blues, jazz, and everything in between. On hand for the session where his rhythm section of

Beau Sample on bass and Alex Hall on drums, as well as Pete Benson on piano and Hammond organ. Pete is an old friend and is featured as pianist of the nonet recordings on “A Walk In Time” (AR4760).

Once Joel and I began to get more specific about what to record, we came up with a list of tunes. We started by writing three originals. The “Early Bird Blues” goes back to the type of tune Sunnyland Slim with whom I worked for two decades would have played early in his career. “Fly Over” and “Bird Watching” pay tribute to the first Hammond organ combos.

From this era stems “Illinois Goes To Chicago” aka “Doggin’ With Doggett,” written by Bill Doggett and featuring Illinois Jacquet on tenor sax. “Rock The House” is a raucous number by guitarist Tiny Grimes, reminiscent of my days with the Mighty Blue Kings. “Blue And Sentimental” comes from the County Basie book, while “Solitude” and “Just Squeeze Me” are Duke Ellington standards. It was fun playing the latter two big band tunes with a small combo and bring out more intimate flavors. “Spring’s Swing,” written by Vivian Hamilton, the wife of Ellington clarinetist and saxophonist Jimmy Hamilton, was on an LP called “Jam Session in Swingville” that my music teacher Chester Gill introduced me to when I was in my teens. We changed the beat and made it a feature for everyone in the band.

And lastly to the two vocals tunes: “Route 66” I first heard sung by Freddy Below, the drummer of the famous Aces. To me it represents the joy of traveling through this vast country. “In The Evening”, a composition Sunnyland Slim would sing on many occasions, and a classic blues written by Leroy Carr.

We hope that the fun and joy we felt in making this recording will rub off on you.

To interview Sam Burckhardt, share his music with your listeners/readers or to review his set, please reach jim.hanke@gmail.com.

Allen Carter from UBS Financial Services, one of our SABC Corporate Members, provides a contribution to this Newsletter on "Managing liabilities to build the future you envision".

Borrowing wisely is every bit as important to your financial success as investing astutely. Taking the time to structure your liabilities with the same care you place in structuring your investments can ensure a balanced approach to achieving your financial goals. Here are some tips on when to borrow, choosing the right type of loan and knowing when to refinance or pay off debts.

A strategic approach to borrowing

To increase your overall net worth, you’ll generally want to be an owner of assets rather than a borrower. However, borrowing can still play an important role in the financial planning process for high net worth individuals and families. Strategic borrowing can help you accomplish a broad range of goals. These goals could include funding taxes, estate planning and maintaining liquidity. Borrowing can also help you leverage the value of existing assets—while continuing to pursue your investment strategy.

The decision to borrow will largely depend on two sets of factors. First, what are your overall financial goals as an individual or a family? And second, what is your outlook on interest rates and how will a change in interest rates impact your loans, as well as your overall portfolio? As your Financial Advisor, I can help you make more informed decisions about when to borrow to help meet your overall financial objectives. I’m available to help you evaluate your options and recommend the right solution for your needs.

What are your goals?
Maintaining liquidity for living expenses

– Leveraging a credit line as part of your emergency cash fund can reduce the overall amount of cash you may need to keep on hand for unexpected events.
– With a credit line, you can enjoy the benefits of keeping your portfolio fully invested, while still being prepared for emergencies.

Purchasing real estate

– For opportunistic purchases, you may want to enter negotiations with a cash-buyer advantage. I can help you source liquidity through a range of solutions.

– If you don’t qualify for a mortgage deduction, I can help you find a loan with a competitive rate and terms to match your needs.

– If you expect to hold a property for a short time, you may want to consider an interest only loan.

Funding taxes

– If you have financial assets that have greatly appreciated in value, you can borrow against the value of the assets instead of selling them and potentially incurring current capital gains taxes on the sale.

Starting or growing a business

– Borrowing can help you fund a start-up or finance a business expansion, without impacting your current cash flow.

Bridging cash gaps

– If your income is quarterly based or varies throughout the year, borrowing can help you create a more stable cash stream.

Estate planning

– If you have shares of appreciated stock that you’d like to gift to your heirs, borrowing against the value of the shares can be an effective estate planning strategy.

Leveraging the value of restricted stock

– If you have assets such as restricted stock, borrowing can help leverage those assets without giving up ownership.

Choosing the right type of loan

To help you find the right loan for your needs, I will help you consider a range of options for borrowing. Factors we’ll assess and evaluate together include:

• What you’re purchasing

• The amount of time you’re looking to borrow

• The type of loan that may best suit your goals, such as fixed, adjustable-rate and interest only options

• Your projected cash flow

Securities-backed lending strategies can be used for nearly anything, from purchasing a car to funding a wedding celebration, paying estimated or year-end taxes or paying off a small mortgage balance.

Knowing when to refinance or pay off debts

It’s a good idea to review your overall debts (or liabilities) at least once a year. Some debts may be consolidated, some paid off and some refinanced. However, just because you can refinance or pay off debts doesn’t always mean you should. As a general rule of thumb, your monthly debt payments should be less than 40% of your monthly income. (For example, the U.S. Consumer Protection Bureau notes that many mortgage lenders require a debt-to-income ratio of less than 43% to qualify for the most favorable rates on a loan.) As your Financial Advisor, I can help you review outstanding loans, such as mortgages, car loans or personal loans, and decide which loans to keep and which to pay down first.

If you’re thinking about taking out new loans or paying off existing loans, let’s talk about the best way to accomplish this. Together, we’ll develop a holistic plan that looks at both sides of the balance sheet. I look forward to helping you meet all of your financial goals—including learning how to borrow more strategically to increase your net worth.

Where are interest rates heading?

No one can predict whether interest rates will rise, fall or stay the same. However, it is possible to have an informed opinion about where rates may be heading. UBS Chief Investment Office Wealth Management Research publishes regular updates on interest rates trends to keep advisors like me, and clients such as you, informed. During our regular account reviews, I’m happy to answer any questions you may have about interest rate trends.

Advice. Beyond investing.

Your financial life encompasses much more than your investment strategy. It includes your goals for the future and how you want to live right now. UBS is committed to addressing all of your needs—giving you the confidence to pursue all of life’s goals.

Recently, Haag-Streit USA has participated in several community events that benefitted the local community of Greater Cincinnati.

Haag-Streit USA and Reliance Medical employees participated in being a lifesaver during the Hoxworth Blood Center Blood Drive at our Mason, OH offices. Twenty-nine employees played a vital role in maintaining an adequate supply of blood to over 32 hospitals and 17 counties in the tri-state area.

Haag-Streit USA also hosted a week long event for Operation Backpack. Children who live in poverty or are homeless face many challenges and tremendous stigmatization – as a result, less than 25% graduate from high school.  Preparing these children for school with a new backpack filled with school supplies boosts their self-esteem and gives them the tools and confidence needed to learn and thrive in school. Our employees donated 613 school supplies for children in need in the Greater Cincinnati area.

Haag-Streit will also be sponsoring a United Way Campaign. Kickoff is September 11th and will run for 4 weeks. During the 4 weeks we will be collecting funds and participating in various activities that will benefit the United Way of Warren County.

Valves with switching position monitoring

SABC Corporate Member Wandfluh offers valves with inductive switching position monitoring. In applications where additional safety requirements must be provided, this valve with integrated switching position monitoring can be used. An inductive proximity switch detects the current position of the spool in the valve. Consequently, a superimposed control can continuously check whether the position of the valve spool corresponds to the requirements of the control, and where necessary react accordingly.

Depending on the type of the valve, one or two sensors are installed which are available in the three different designs, normally open/closed, NPN or PNP.

Further details can be found in data sheet 1.2-62.  I’ve also attached our brochure for this new product.

An information sheet is attached and can be viewed and/or printed from our website:  http://www.wandfluh.com/en/downloads/news/.
